Ultralight Backpacking — 9 Questions to Help You Choose The Right Lightweight Shelter
August 5, 2010 by admin

One of the main contributors to backpack weight is your shelter. Two-person tents can weigh six pounds or more. Even a solo tent can be heavy after a long day of backpacking. And that weight seems to be cumulative on an extended hike, getting heavier day after day. If you want to cut pack weight, your shelter is a good place to start.
Carrying less weight on your backpacking trip means you can hike farther in a day with less fatigue. It means you can enjoy the entire trip more. But some lightweight shelters require some sacrifices that may be outside your comfort zone. Your answers to these questions can help you decide which lightweight backpacking shelter is right for you.
When I backpack, am I camping or hiking? People have different approaches to backpacking. Some camp so they can hike; some hike so they can camp. If the camping part is more important to you, you may be willing to carry a little more weight so you’re more comfortable in camp. If you’re more focused on the hiking, your tent may just be something to keep rain off while you sleep, and the lighter the better.
How much room do I really need? If you are hiking alone, you only need a one-person tent, although many choose a two-man tent for the extra space. If you keep your gear outside overnight, you won’t need as much room in the tent, but if you are more comfortable keeping your things close at hand and out of the weather, you’ll have to allow space (and weight) for that.
Can I live with insects? Some ultralight backpacking shelters are not fully enclosed. If you don’t like the idea of sleeping with creepy-crawlers, you may be willing to carry the weight of a full tent with a zippered door.
Can I live with dampness? Tents with full rain flies are heavier, but they do a good job of keeping rain out. At the other end of the scale, bivy sacks are very light, but they are known to retain condensation.
Do I hike with trekking poles? Freestanding tents are heavier because they include structural poles, while some ultralight backpacking tents can be set up using trekking poles as supports, thus eliminating the weight of tent poles.
Will I spend much time in my tent? You may think you can get by with a small shelter because you plan to spend most of your time outside, but be aware things may not go the way you plan. After the second full day spent in your tent because of rain, you may be wishing you had a shelter you could sit up in.
Where will I be hiking? If you’re climbing up and down mountains, a tent with a small footprint may be easier to wedge into the single tiny site you find late in the evening. If you’re in a rocky area, it may be impossible to to drive tent stakes in the ground, and you may wish for a freestanding tent. If you’re in the desert, you may want a fully-enclosed tent to keep out rattlesnakes and scorpions.
Am I careful with my gear? Quality lightweight backpacking shelters are well-made, but they might use lighter fabrics that aren’t as bomb-proof as that in heavier tents. Used with care, they will perform and last for years, but if you know you have a tendency to be rough on your gear, perhaps you would do better with something a bit heavier.
What are my options? Learn about the best choices in lightweight backpacking tents. Balance your needs and comfort zone against the weight of the available shelters. With options like bivy sacks, tarps, and backpacking hammocks, you may find your choice of lightweight tent isn’t a tent at all.

Coleman Company, Inc. is well-known American company that specializes in outdoor recreation products. Throughout its history, Coleman has produced a wide variety of equipment primarily aimed at the camping and recreational markets. There are many styles to choose from, but for the purpose of selecting a family camping tent that will cover the most popular and the easiest to find.
The Coleman Tent is a collapsible portable shelter of fabric that stretched and used for camping outdoors or as a temporary building. Coleman is proud of their heritage as a company full of innovative ideas. These tents allow for more head room than most styles, but do slope inward on the sides.
Coleman Tent are great for windy conditions because of their frame strength which was started by W.C. Coleman himself selling lanterns with mantles instead of wicks that emitted brighter white light, and progressed through to the introduction of plastic coolers and the distribution of a million portable pocket stoves. There are a variety of different tents designed for different situations. It is important to consider potential situations when choosing a tent, for some tents are designed to endure exhausting levels of heat, or water, or cold, and snow. Coleman Tents also come in various sizes and are designed for a certain number of people. Although it may be possible to fit more people than recommended, it’s important to note that it may sacrifice comfort and durability of the product.
Coleman Tent has room to sleep, store and live comfortably. Once have stored your belongings, the living area can be used as such and is extremely practical. Coleman Tent is intended for car camping or large family camping when weight is not a concern. They are great for larger families or extended camping trips where more space would be nice.
They are heavier because of the extra fabric and more difficult to assemble, but are great when space is needed. If visiting standard campgrounds and parks with your family most of the time, the most vital factors in choosing the right tent will be space and comfort, as well as aeration and extra features. The large bedroom will accommodate four people and the smaller bedroom is suitable for two. This tent is ideal for families and if you don’t need two bedrooms you can remove a bedroom to give yourselves a larger living area.
These tents don’t have much head space because of the hostile slope of the walls, but they do save a lot of weight and space when in the bag. These are typically used for backpacking tents where space and weight is important. These tents are not as wind resistant, but are great for mild weather camping.
Think about the number of people who will be staying in the tent as well as any other camping gear or personal items that need to store inside it. When choosing a family camping tent, you will want to have enough space for everyone to live comfortably, particularly on unmitigated camping trips.

Backpacking – Six Ways to Save Money

As pack weights get lighter and going into the wilderness gets safer, backpacking also is getting more and more expensive. How do you save money without giving up the ultralight equipment and safety gear? Let’s look at a few different ways.
Backpacking in the most remote places has become much safer now that there are personal locator beacons. One I recently saw advertised lets you call for help to 911 and family or friends at the touch of a button. It will even locate you on Google maps so others can see exactly where you are. Of course, at almost 0 for the device plus an annual fee of 0 per year for the service, it isn’t cheap.
My alternative? Just bring your cell phone and GPS unit. If you already own the phone you will only have to buy the GPS, and using it is free. When in trouble you can call for help on your phone and give the coordinates of where you are. They can type them into an online service themselves to see where you are on a map. Since your cell phone probably isn’t satellite based, coverage won’t be quite as good as the expensive locator, but it is a reasonable way to save money. Here are five more.
1. Buy used gear.
I would never buy an old sleeping bag, because the filling gets destroyed with time. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with used aluminum pans or tent stakes. I have seen both in thrift stores for a fraction of what they cost new. You can also find some decent backpacking equipment online at either Ebay or in outdoor forums which allow users to sell their old gear.
2. Stay close to home.
A big part of the expense of backpacking can be the travel expenses to get to the trailhead. But do you really have to go 2,000 miles to backpack somewhere beautiful? If you intend to eventually hike some of the trails closer to home, why not start with them? Inevitably there will be destinations you never get to, so why not have them be the more expensive ones?
3. Buy real foods.
Forget the expensive freeze-dried backpacker’s meals. Bring nuts, granola and other inexpensive real foods. For cooked meals, bring instant brown rice and a fast-cooking legume like red lentils. Noodles with olive oil, parmesan cheese and spices can be more delicious than a freeze-dried dinner and cost only a fourth as much. Many supermarket foods are better than specialty “backpacking meals” in my opinion.
4. Buy regular clothing.
Contrary to the impression given by outdoor clothing manufacturers, you don’t need a new high-tech wardrobe to get out into the wilderness. Instead of a super-wicking t-shirt, try a 50/50 cotton polyester blend t-shirt from Wal-Mart for . It will probably be more comfortable, and dry almost as fast if it gets wet. In a warm climate with brief summer showers you can forgo the 0 waterproof/breathable rain jacket in favor of a low-tech one, or even a emergency poncho. There are usually ways to save a lot of money on clothing if you consider where you’ll be going and what is truly necessary.
5. Base camp.
If you just want to get out and hike, you might consider camping in your car or in a cheap tent next to it. You can hike all day with just water, food, and the few other things you need in any cheap day pack (buy it used at a thrift store to save money), and return to the car to sleep. You don’t need a great sleeping bag, backpack, tent or other expensive gear if you don’t plan to spend your nights out there in the woods. This technically isn’t backpacking, but perhaps the point for you is just to see and hike in some beautiful places, and on a budget.

Camping Tent Advice – Which Tent Should I Buy?

TENT ADVICE – Camping Tent & Equipment Advice
Going camping is one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors. Choosing a tent and buying camping equipment that is right for you is fun too, so make sure you know which camping tent is the best suited for you, whether it be a family tent, backpacking tent or group tent. CheapTents.com has the right advice and guidance to help you in this decision.
What type of tent do you need?
Choosing which of the many different designs and sizes of tents from the many available is a difficult task. To start narrowing down the options, we suggest listing your particular requirements. The first question has to be how many people is the tent for? If the tent is for solo use then you’re really looking for a tent weighing 1-2.5kg, which immediately eliminates well over half the tent models available. Most people share tents though, so this is where the greatest choice lie, with weights ranging from 1.75 to 5 kilos, the latter being a sensible upper weight limit for a tent that is being carried.
At the lower weight range, tent space will be at a minimum for two campers whilst the upper-end models of tents will take up to three or even four people in relative comfort. If your tent will be used mostly from the car with only the occasional venture into the wilds then weight isn’t so important. If you go backpacking regularly every gram counts, so an ultralight tent is vital. How much room you need depends on how tidy you are and how well you get on with your companions! Sharing small tents may be fine in the summer, but in winter when the nights are long and cold and often stormy a roomy tent makes camping far more enjoyable. The size of the porch is important too. In winter it needs to be large enough to store all your spare gear and have room for cooking too. In fact two porches are found on many winter or 4 season tents.
When and where you will use the tent should be taken into consideration too. Some designs (‘A’ pole, geodesic, well guyed tunnel or single hoop) perform much better than others in strong winds and so are more suited for exposed high levels sites. A necessity for the mountaineer but not for the canoe camper or cycle tourer. Not all tents are four season models. For winter use look for steep walls to shed snow but with some gradient to detract the force for the wind. More important in summer is to have insect netting doors on the inner tent, essential if you are going somewhere like the Scottish Highlands where midges are rampant.
How easy is the tent to pitch? For base camp use, this isn’t too important. If you are moving on everyday however you need a tent you can erect quickly, especially when it is wet and windy. Consider too, whether it is erected inside first or last – as inner tents ideally need to be kept dry. Finally ask yourself if you like the tent. This is important as you’ll be spending a lot of time in it. Choose a colour that appeal to you and a shape you find attractive. And when you get your new tent home take it out and check all the bits are there and then practice pitching it in the garden – the more you practice erecting your tent the more . You don’t want to arrive at your first camp site, when inevitably it will be dark and raining, to discover that you haven’t enough tent pegs and you don’t know which sleeve which pole goes in.
Tent Choice
From Wild Country, Terra Nova, The North Face, Vango, VauDe, MSR, Marmot, Mountain Equipment and more, it’s sometime difficult to choose the best tent for you. These manufacturers design their tents to the highest standards, materials and designs are tested to the limit and quality control is excellent. These are high quality, high performance tents with a guarantee of quality workmanship and materials. Personal requirements vary and priorities are highly individual, from a solo 1kg ultralight tent to a roomy base tent for two guilty gear hounds! Whatever your needs you will find the ideal tent at CheapTents.com.
Tent Design
Many and varied! Ridge or hoop tents, tunnel tents or geodesic tents, or a dome tent? Choice is very personal depending on your priorities for weight and space. A variety of factors contribute to the performance of the tent in tough conditions: How aerodynamic the tent is; the number and positioning of guy points; the number and configuration of the tent poles. Geodesic tent design is the strongest and so is often used as an expedition tent. It uses intersecting tent poles to produce a strong self-supporting structure with great internal volume. The interlocking tent poles easily handle snow load and since there is very little unsupported fabric, the tent has minimum ‘sail area’ to catch the wind.
Tunnel tents are sometimes preferred to dome tents as they offer a larger usable space for the area of the pitch that they use, as they have a good usable height along the middle line rather than a single peak as with dome tents.
Dome tents are often lightweight tents as they often use just two poles (or three including a porch pole) that cross at the apex of the tent. They use a simple tent pole structure as can be seen below, which is easily erected, making it a popular tent as a backpacking tent.
Family tents and group tents come in a variety of sizes and tent design. They are usually designed with the intent of being used as a base camp tent, where the tent is erected just once or twice for a single trip. This means that they can be bigger and heavier, but at the same time providing more practical and usable space for longer durations and more people.
All tents must be pitched correctly for optimum performance. Care in siting, e.g. tail to the wind or a sheltered place, can make a substantial difference.
Tent Materials
Most flysheets and groundsheets are made from a lightweight nylon fabric or, alternatively, a more durable lightweight polyester. For groundsheets, a slightly heavier fabric is used, since increased abrasion resistance is required. Ripstop nylon is reinforced with a fibrous mesh to prevent tearing.
Both flysheets and groundsheets are coated to make them completely waterproof. A variety of coatings are used. Polyurethane (PU) is probably the most common. Silicone elastomer, as used by The North Face, enables even lighter weight nylon to be used without sacrificing any of its strength. All these coatings are non breathable. Thus condensation may form on the inside of the flysheet. However, this can be reduced by good ventilation. Groundsheet protectors (footprints) are also available and help to protect the tent’s built in groundsheet from getting ripped or dirty.
Tent Repair and Care
It’s important to be prepared. If you’re looking to make an investment in a high quality tent, it’s important to make sure you take good care of it. Make sure you read the section above, but also consider buying tent repair kits and tent cleaner.
Tent Brands
Many camping equipment shops will sell a variety of tents to suit different people’s needs with some companies specialising in a particular range of tents such as lightweight tents, base camp / expedition tents or even group or family tents. Popular tent brands that are sold in many camping shops include Vaude Tents, MSR, Wild Country Tents, Vango, Mountain Equipment Tents, The North Face Tents, Wynnster and Aztec Tents.

PART 1 of 3 ////////////// Sleeping under the stars is a bit overrated for me. Seems the bugs attack, the critters find you, the wind blows away your body heat, frost and condensation soak your bag, then the rain falls, and no matter what your gear gets filthy.
